Colt won the contract when offering the Colt Single Action Army. Because of the timing, F&W did not receive the military contract they had sought, and only 2,000 examples were produced. In 1873, Forehand & Wadsworth introduced their own. The partners knew that they must appeal to other markets if they were to achieve success. However, the quality was still below that of Colt and Smith & Wesson. The new design was designated as the F&W Double Action Revolver.įorehand & Wadsworth were known for making quality firearms. By the mid-1870s, Forehand & Wadsworth had released a new double-action revolver capable of firing rim-fire cartridges. The first firearms produced under the new name resembled the Allen & Wheelock revolvers. In 1871, Allen & Wheelock Revolvers changed the name to Forehand & Wadsworth. When they became partners with Ethan Allen, they helped an already successful business become even better. Both men had a knack for entrepreneurship. Sullivan Forehand was the bookkeeper for Ethan Allen, and Henry Wadsworth was a retired Union officer. In 1863, Wheelock passed away, and Allen made Forehand and Wadsworth partners in his firearms business. Their company was called Allen & Wheelock Revolvers. Allen was a prominent gun maker and built firearms with his partner, Thomas Wheelock. Both men had married daughters of American patriot Ethan Allen.
